Car rent in New York would mean freedom, definitely, since you'd have more places to go with your own wheels. But it also means having to drive in NYC, and that's something that may be easier said than done.

Are you sure you want a car rent in New York?

If you ask the locals, they'll give you a resounding 'no' as advice. Majority of locals prefer to walk since you're more likely to arrive at your destination on time than when driving a car during peak hours. And if you think you know the meaning of congested roads and slow traffic, you probably don't until you've experienced it in NYC.

Besides walking, you can also take the sub or get a cab and all these are infinitely more affordable than driving your own car since parking fees can be terribly expensive, not to mention slots being quite limited! And when there is no parking space available, you may have no other recourse left than to accept valet service. That's even more heinously expensive and you may even have to give a tip afterwards!

Confusing Traffic Regulations

Take for instance when the stoplights turn red. Normally, you can still turn right in this situation. But if you're driving in NYC you should know that doing so may equivalent to committing a traffic violation! There are also a couple of busy avenues where a left turn is forbidden at certain times of the day. There are road signs for these, but do you think you'll be able to catch every one of them?

Insurance Requirements

NYC has very strict and high standards for drivers when it comes to automobile insurance. So if your insurance policy has expired or it's not up to the standards of NYC then a car rent in New York is definitely not the best option for you.

Scary Pedestrians

Jaywalking is still a crime, but there's probably no one more expert than this than New Yorkers. If you can't handle the thought of a kid zigzagging in front your car at the last possible second - yes, second and not minute - then a car rent in New York isn't in the cards for you.

Tricky Parking

As mentioned early on, parking can be a huge hassle when you're driving in New York. If you have someplace to go, it's always best to plan ahead about your parking options. Make sure you have more than one alternative ready.

Now, if you're not bothered by any of the conditions above then go ahead and rent a car in NYC. You've got the heart of a lion for a driver so you definitely deserve to have wheels while you're in the Big Apple.
